INTRODUCTION

As in the depths of all great cultures, in ancient Mexican culture a cosmogonic conception that explains the destiny of man and the world takes root.

Such conception nurtures the dynamic development that reveals man as the entity that, in alliance with two divine potenties, urges them to action, and gives them, with his very body, the matter for the creation of the universe.

Such conception was found in an ancient text the thruth of wich is proven by the existence of innumerable works of art that coincide with it and explain it. The text of reference is Histoyre du Mechique, a sixteenth century French manuscript.

There one reads how two gods, after having made a human being descend to the surface of waters of unknown creator, and after noticing in him certain parts of his serpentine nature, feel awaken in themselves the need to create; in order to satisfy it, they both transmute each into a great serpent; they descend then, thus transmuted, towards the human being. They hold him by his feet and hands, pressing him by the middle, and divide him in two; with the halves thus obtained they create the earth and heaven.

Of this sort, man, the motor and initial matter of the creation of the world, asumes henceforth his creative function as a permanent duty. Creation is not an unique, but an unending process. Man is to fulfill it uniterruptedly, taking upon himself the duty of guiding what was initially created towards its perfection.

The purpose of this Museum is to demostrate that in ancient Mexican culture, from its beginning to its end, is expressed this very same cosmogonic idea that governs it and gives it a superior sense.
